Some blood products have only a very short shelf-life (only 7 days for blood platelets, 42–49 days for red blood cells). This complicates the task of ensuring that enough blood products of the right blood types are available at all times.

A larger-scale accident can lead to an enormous and unforeseen increase in the demand for blood products, but even a single operation can unexpectedly require from 200 to 300 units of blood products.
Swiss Transfusion SRC must maintain a certain reserve of blood products in order to compensate for seasonal fluctuations, both those in donor numbers and those in demand on the part of hospitals and clinics. This reserve is intended to ensure that Swiss Transfusion SRC can meet the blood demand even in the face of sudden and unexpected increases of demand.
