Blood stem cell donation

With the Swiss Transplantation Act (in force as of 1 July 2007), Swiss Transfusion SRC received a mandate from Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) for the Swiss Blood Stem Cells (SBSC) division. The mandate encompasses the following services/areas of responsibility for SBSC:

  • Management of the registry
  • Donor searches
  • Arranging collection and transportation of transplant material
  • Search for blood stem cell donors and coordination of donations
  • International cooperation
  • Provision of information and advice to public authorities
  • Follow-up checks on all related and unrelated donors

The umbrella organisation receives support from the regional transfusion services in the fulfilment of these functions.

Functions of the regional blood transfusion services

  • Partly recruitment and registration of blood stem cell donors, incl. transmission of anonymised data to Swiss Transfusion SRC
  • Donor management
  • Assistance of donors in connection with compatibility tests and blood stem cell donations, when applicable
  • Partly follow-up checks on individuals who have donated blood stem cells
